S2 WEEK 2

2/13-2/18

Project Status:

We made a preliminary CAD model and attempted to 3D print it in a larger size. However, it did not go as smoothly as expected, indicating a need for a shift in either the design or the device used to print the prototype. It may be a material issue with the thicker plastic filaments being used to print such a fine barb, in which case we will plan to discuss the possibility of using Dr. Felder's 3D printer. We also did the design review for SLING Health, where we got some good recommendations on where to look for more barb designs and the methods with which we can mass produce them. Through one of the reviewers, we are attempting to get in touch with a company that currently utilizes laser microprinting for their product. We hope to learn more about the process of making a physical prototype through them and by talking to Dr. Felder. We have also decided to consult a connection who is more versed in SolidWorks to design our model, as we have found that there are some limitations to the CAD skills we learned in BME140.

Next Steps:

This week we hope to talk to Dr. Felder about how to create a scaled prototype for testing purposes, as well as bounce some ideas off him regarding the design of the barb.
